Who can apply for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE ) card?

The UK nationals living in Spain before 1st of January 2021

The UK nationals living in Spain before the end of the Brexit transition period that is before 1st January 2021 have the right to request Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ). Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE ) card explicitly states that it has been issued to the holder under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement.

The UK nationals living in Spain after 6th July 2021

If you are a UK national and register for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero application after 6th July 2021 and you were living in Spain before 1st January 2021, You must follow two step process inorder to obtain your Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ). If you meet the requirements and if your application is approved you will be issued with the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero -TIE. If you have children then they should be also registered to obtain the TIE Card.

Steps to be followed to submit a TIE residency application and apply for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ). 

  • You will need to submit your residence application to the immigration office Oficina de Extranjeros in the particular province where you live. 
  • You can also submit your application electronically if you have a digital signature. The website link is here
  • You will need to submit the following documentation
    • Application form EX20 and Passport
    • Document which demonstrates your residence in Spain before 1 January 2021
    • Document which demonstrates you meet the EU residence criteria on income and healthcare

Steps to apply for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ) once the residency application has been approved

  • Once your residency application has been approved by the immigration office you will need to: 
  • Apply for the appointment online. Appointment link is here
  • While taking appointment you will need to select or choose your province, trámites cuerpo nacional de policía and Policía Exp tarjeta asociada al Acuerdo de retirada ciudadanos británicos y sus familiares.
  • Next you will need to attend the police station with all these documents:
    • Application form EX23 and Passport.
    • Proof that you have paid them.
    • Photographs. 

Difference between Permanent and Temporary Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card )

If you have been living in Spain or have been resident for less than 5 years you will be issued a temporary Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ). Your TIE card will be valid for 5 years

If you have been living in Spain or have been resident for more than 5 years you will be issued a permanent Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ). Your TIE card will be valid for 10 years

You will have to renew the Temporary Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero ( TIE card ) month before or within 3 months of its expiry.
